Searching for live acts within driving distance of its monthly “DANCE?PARTY!” in Chapel Hill, frequeNC came across the myspace page of a self-produced, hip-hop group from Augusta, Georgia with bands like Talking Heads and Depeche Mode among its top friends.  Listening to their posted tracks, it was obvious that old friends and collaborators, Donte Oliver and Wayne Brooks, were coming into a wild, new place with their creative output.  These raw cuts document this duo’s twisted vision of southern party music in it’s new born state.  Jjak Hogan also recorded for UK label ,Rekids, and evolved a retro, electro alter ego, Bass Invadurrz.

Datahata (pronounced to rhyme, like a hater of data) marks frequeNC records insider, Zeke Graves’ first outing as a solo electronic artist.  Described by Graves as “dubwise electro”, this record is popping with clean, spacious analog production, heavy delay and plenty of aquatic references (for the Drexciyan deep sea dwellers out there).  The culmination of of a year and a half of live sets, this record is a must listen for fans of classic Detroit or Dutch electro.

One of the musical manifestations of the influential American art collective, Paper Rad, Extreme Animals is Jacob Ciocci and David Wightman.  Now based in Pittsburg and San Diego and involved in art and music academia respectively, they met in high school in Chapel Hill.  Their music takes elements of noise, techno, pop and hip-hop with equal parts day-glow paint, talking stuffed animals and strobe light, puts them in a blender on maximum and removes the lid.  This record captures the ecstatic power of some of their essential early jams.  The first frequeNC record to be cut by Detroit legend, Ron Murphy, it’s topped off with 4 of Ron’s trademark locked loop grooves.

The hip-hop and punk fusing duo of Chad Byrne and Whitney Skillcorn formed in San Francisco in the early 2000s.  Their energetic live shows were notoriously punctuated by props, practiced choreography and improvised antics of all types.  There are lots of groups bringing jump-around vibes to the stage but these party professionals have proven they can bounce with the best.

Bush’s presidency.  Zeke Graves and Robert Biggers contribute a raw delay-filled techno cut recorded live, through the air.  Charlie Hearon remixes beloved Talking Heads and Atlanta-based sound artist and musician Paul Kayhart contributes a long experimental piece he created in 1991, still musically and thematically relevant in 2005 (and beyond).

Cold Sides was an experimental post-punk band from Chapel Hill, active from the early to mid 2000s, with Zeke Graves and Robert Biggers as it’s core.  At the time of this recording, the band also included Neill Prewitt and David Cantwell.  The A-side demonstrates the raw power of this 4-piece’s live set at the time.  The B-side contains demo versions of two of the A-side titles recorded as bedroom 4-track jams by Robert.
